The Central Government on Friday announced the names of two new judges for the Supreme Court. After this the strength of 34 judges has been completed in SC. The judges whose names have been selected include the names of Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Arvind Kumar.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had its full strength of 34 judges during September 2019 to November 2019. After this, the post of judges remained vacant till February 2023.

Law Minister gave information
The names of the new judges were announced by Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju in a tweet. He wrote- “Under the provisions of the Indian Constitution, the President has appointed High Court judges Rajesh Bindal and Arvind Kumar as Supreme Court judges. My best wishes are with them.”

On February 5, the appointment of 5 judges was approved.
Earlier, on the basis of the recommendation of the collegium, the government had approved the names of five judges on February 5 itself. After this, the five judges took oath on 6 February. After the strictness of the Supreme Court, the government had finalized these names within 24 hours. The names of the remaining two judges were approved on February 10.

The names of the judges were recommended by the collegium.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended 5 names to the government on 13 December. These included Justice Pankaj Mithal Chief Justice Rajasthan HC, Justice Sanjay Karol Chief Justice Patna HC, Justice PV Sanjay Kumar Chief Justice Manipur HC, Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah of Patna High Court and Justice Manoj Mishra of Allahabad HC. The sanction strength of the judges in the Supreme Court is 34 including the CJI. After the appointment of 5 judges, now there are 32 judges. Still two posts are vacant.

What is the Supreme Court Collegium?

The collegium on which this entire controversy is taking place is the system of appointment and transfer of judges in the High Court and the Supreme Court. The members of the collegium are the judges. They send suggestions of names for appointment of new judges to the Prime Minister and the President. After approval, judges are appointed.

The collegium system was implemented in the country in the year 1993. The Collegium consists of 5 members. CJI is the head in this. Apart from this, there are 4 most senior judges. Right now it has 6 judges.
