The Supreme Court on Monday made an important comment regarding hate speech and hate crime. The court said that in a secular country like India, there is no place for hate crimes on the basis of religion. The court also said that the cases of hate speech are continuously increasing in the country. There can be no compromise on this. It is the responsibility of the state to take strict action against the accused in such cases.

In the year 2021, 62-year-old Kazim Ahmed Sherwani became a victim of hate crime in Noida. While hearing the same matter, a bench headed by Justice KM Joseph has commented.

SC said – they cannot suppress hate crime under the carpet
The Supreme Court expressed concern over the increasing cases of hate speech and the hearing continued till 6 pm. The court said that if the state accepts the problem of hate speech then only a solution can be found. Apart from this, the court questioned the police whether the hate crime would be recognized or an attempt would be made to suppress it? This is hate crime. Would you sweep it under the carpet?

Even if someone is beaten in the name of religion, no case is a problem
If a person comes to the police and says that I was wearing a cap and my beard was pulled and abused in the name of religion. Even after this no case is registered then it is a problem. Action should also be taken against such policemen. The court further said that whoever is coming to the police station should not be made to feel like an accused.
