The road and two bridges connecting Uttara to Sopkha in West Sikkim district were completely washed away.

Several incidents of landslides occurred due to heavy rains in West Sikkim district. This destroyed more than a hundred houses. Incessant rains have damaged many roads, culverts in the state. Due to heavy rains, many rivers are flowing above the danger mark. An orange alert has been issued for heavy rain and thunderstorm over Northeast India for the next three days.

According to reports, the road connecting Uttara with Sopkha and two bridges were completely washed away. Nearby trout fish and poultry farms were also washed away. Similarly, the road connecting Dantum to Pelling and Gyalshing was washed away in the Kalaj river. A mud house, a cement building, two cremation grounds and an excavator were also washed away by the rising water level of the river.

No casualty has been reported so far.

The water in the Ramam river has damaged all the temporary bridges in the border areas connecting West Bengal. Due to heavy rains in Lachen, Lachung and Chungthang valleys on Friday, the road leading to Chungthang from the North Sikkim district headquarters of Mangan was washed away, forcing traffic to stop.

On the other hand, the army continued the work of evacuating the tourists stranded in Chungthang even today. About 300 tourists were evacuated.

Efforts are on to restore road connectivity, while evacuation of tourists will continue.

Made temporary crossing at night
Troops of Trishakti Corps, Indian Army and Border Roads Organization (BRO) swung into action and worked through the night to build a temporary crossing at the flash flood site to rescue tourists in the heavy rain and inclement weather. Tents are being set up in the area and posts have been made for medical help. Tourists will be given all possible help till the way is cleared for their onward journey.

The army helped the tourists to cross the river. They were given hot food, tent and medical help. The Indian Army is active in helping tourists and the local population, guarding the border in the high altitude areas of the Himalayas.

The road connecting Singtam, Dikchu, Rangran, Mangan and Chungthang was badly hit by landslides. Dikchu to Gangtok route via Rakdung-Tintek route is open for light vehicles only. The local administration has also issued a helpline number 8509822997 for information about the stranded tourists.
