Government of India is going to block 14 mobile applications. Terrorists hiding in Pakistan were using these apps for communication with their supporters and on-ground workers in Kashmir. This has been claimed in some media reports.

The apps being banned by the Center include Creepvisor, Enigma, SafeSwiss, Vikerme, Briar, Beechat, Mediafire, Nandbox, Conion, IMO, Element, Second Line, Jangi and Threema. Some of these apps are also available on Google Playstore.

Apps used to keep the identity of users anonymous
The agencies keep an eye on the channels used by the terrorists for communication among themselves. The agencies came to know about such apps while tracking a conversation. Most of these apps were designed to provide anonymity to the users.

Because of their features, agencies were finding it difficult to reach these users. The agencies had tried to contact the app management on several occasions, but it did not have any office in India. One of these apps has been blocked under section 69A of the IT Act 2000.
