Desai had misled the officers, said – those who fired were wearing kurta-pajama

Desai Mohan was the first to inform about the firing to Major Ashutosh Shukla of 80 Medium Regiment. He had said, “At 4.30 a.m. there was firing in the barracks of the mess. There came two unknown persons. They were wearing white kurta-pyjamas. Their faces and heads were covered with cloth.

Both these officers were coming out of the gunner’s sleeping place in the mess after firing. One of them had an INSAS rifle in his hand and the other had an ax. Seeing me, he ran towards the forest.

Desai Mohan’s lie was caught due to these 5 reasons

1. There were no marks of injury from the axe.
According to police sources, Gunner Desai said that one of the suspects was carrying a rifle and the other was carrying an axe. However, there was no mark of injury from the ax on the bodies of the four jawans who died. Bullets were fired only from the rifle, due to which the police suspected Desai.

2. No suspect seen in CCTV
Desai claimed that the 2 killers had come in plain clothes. However, no such suspect was seen inside or outside the Army Cantt. The suspects were also not detected in the CCTV cameras.

3. Desai’s statement turned out to be false in the search operation
Desai had claimed that the suspects had fled towards the forest. The army also conducted a search operation, but despite this no suspect was found, so that Desai’s claim could be proved right.

4. Only rifle bullet marks were found on the body
When the officers went to the place of firing, the bodies of Gunners Sagar Banne and Yogesh Kumar were lying in the first room and Santosh and Kamlesh in the second room. There were marks of bullets on his body. Many bullet cases were scattered nearby. An INSAS rifle allotted in the name of Lance Naik Harish of the unit went missing on April 9. In the investigation, it was found that the soldiers were fired from this INSAS rifle.

5. Notice was sent on 12 so that the accused does not get suspicious
In this case, not only Desai, 12 jawans were issued notices and called for questioning. So Desai Mohan felt that he was called because he was the main witness. When all the jawans came to join the inquiry, Desai Mohan was arrested. After this, he was questioned till late night.

The slain soldiers also used to do the duty of night watchman.

  • The police were told that in front of the officer’s mess, barracks have been built for the jawans to stay. The jawans and guards working in the officer’s mess live here.
  • Gunner Naga Suresh lives in the lower room. Gunner Sagar Banne, Gunner Yogesh Kumar lived in one of the 2 rooms above and Gunner Santosh and Gunner Kamlesh lived in the other room. Who also used to do the duty of night watchman for 2-2 hours without weapons. On the night of April 12, all the jawans finished their duty and went to the room.
