Students of Quaid-e-Azam University of Islamabad celebrated Holi on the campus on 12 June.

The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan withdrew the notice banning the celebration and playing of Holi in schools, colleges and universities within a day. The notice was issued by the Commission on Wednesday. The notice was being severely criticized across the country.

Salman Sufi, head of the Prime Minister’s Strategic Reforms Unit, clarified that Education Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain had directed the commission to withdraw its controversial order letter.

According to the statement issued by the Education Commission on Thursday, the Commission respects all religions and does not intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments in any way.

The Education Commission had given this order following an incident on June 12, when students of Quaid-e-Azam University celebrated Holi in the university campus. Its photos and videos also went viral.

The Education Commission had further said that the Commission has the responsibility of improving the higher education sector, but it is also necessary to maintain the culture and traditions of Pakistan.

We respect all religions and accept their importance, but this freedom regarding religion is only up to an extent.

Holi was organized by the Mehran Students’ Council.
The commission had advised all higher educational institutions to refrain from participating in activities that are directly contrary to the country’s identity.

Hindu students were thrashed for playing Holi in Pakistan in March

This is not the first incident regarding Holi ruckus in Pakistan. On March 6, some Hindu students playing Holi were attacked in Pakistan’s Punjab University.
