  • These four incidents happened within a month. The matter of change of religion came to the fore in all the four. Everyone had the same pattern, first hid the name. Loved Forced to change religion, started living together or got married. Now know beyond these stories.

There is no mention of love jihad in the conversion law
On 23 November 2020, this Illegal Conversion Prohibition Ordinance 2020 was placed in the House. Then it was said from the side of the government – We have come up with a law to check conversions with some stringent penal provisions against people and organizations. “If found involved in conversion, uses coercion, deception. Induces marriage or adopts any unfair means.” On 27 November, Governor Anandiben Patel approved this ordinance. After this it became law.

what is love jihad
Love Jihad is made up of two words. Love means love. It doesn’t need a definition. It is a deep and happy feeling. Whereas the word Jihad was born with Islam. It is an Arabic word. According to the experts of Islam, putting all one’s power to fulfill a purpose and achieving it is called Jihad. Although this word is not mentioned anywhere in the official register. There is no mention of love jihad anywhere in the law made by the UP government.

According to the ordinance, if a young man belonging to one religion converts a girl of another religion only for marriage, then it is wrong and the marriage will be invalid. However, no religion was mentioned here. If a person wants to change religion, then he has to take permission from the District Magistrate of his district 60 days in advance. If a religious leader converts without permission, then he can be jailed for 3 years.

433 cases registered in two and a half years
According to the data received from 27 November 2020 to 30 April 2023, 433 cases related to conversion were registered. A total of 855 accused were arrested by the police. Maximum 86 cases were registered in Bareilly. 61 cases were registered in Gorakhpur and 55 in Lucknow. On the other hand, if we talk about arrests, maximum arrests took place in Prayagraj zone. A total of 163 people were arrested here, out of total cases, 46 were registered here.

Police encounter in Lucknow
In Dubagga area of Lucknow, 17-year-old Nidhi Gupta used to be harassed by her neighbor Sufiyan. When the girl told her family, her maternal uncle Ravi Gupta reached Sufiyan’s house with a complaint. The talk escalated. Sufiyaan reaches the fourth floor of the building to kill Ravi. Nidhi arrives to save. It is alleged that Sufiyan pushed Nidhi away from there. Nidhi passed away. Sufiyan ran away. Police declared 25 thousand reward.

After three days, when the police surrounded Sufiyan in Dubagga itself, he opened fire on the police. The police also fired and caught Sufiyan. He was shot in his right leg.

Conversion angle in death of 19 girls in 5 years
We took out the data of the last 5 years. It was learned that there are 17 cases in which 19 girls died. In all these cases, the girls were found to be Hindu and the accused Muslim. The first case in the list is of July 5, 2017 when Heena Talreja was shot dead by her own husband Adnan Khan. Before the murder, Adnan got Hina gang-raped by his friends.

Shot on the forehead. To save Heena, he put a knife in the wound and twisted it. Later, after throwing the dead body on the highway of Kokhraj police station area of Kaushambi district, they ran away. The police arrested everyone and disclosed the matter.

Is there any organized organization behind the conversion for marriage?
The biggest and most effective action of the UP police regarding the conversion of Hindu girls took place in Kanpur. In the beginning of 2021, 14 cases were registered there within two months. Many Hindu organizations including BJP, Bajrang Dal created ruckus talking about Love Jihad. Police constituted SIT. When the SIT started the investigation, no evidence was found of any organization behind it.

Out of 14 cases, there were 8 such in which the girls got married knowing that the person in front was a Muslim. There were 6 cases in which the boys had misled the girls and married them. Two cases were related to Naubasta police station.

Now the question is whether Muslims are being targeted
To answer this question, we have to extract the data for the month after the law came into force. In that one month, 14 cases were registered. 51 people were arrested. Not a single Hindu youth was included in these. During the same period, cases of Muslim girls marrying Hindu boys came to light in Bareilly, Meerut and Kanpur. No case was registered there but they were given security.

When this law was made, 104 retired IAS officers wrote a letter to CM Yogi. These officers opposed the law. Those who wrote the letter include former National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon, former Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, former advisor to PM TKA Nair, AS Daulat, Sujatha Rai. These officials believed that this law was being used as a stick. This is one in a series of heinous atrocities committed against the Indian youth.

  • A few days after the protest letter, 224 retired officers wrote a letter in support of this law. In the letter, 104 former IAS officers opposing the conversion law were described as politically motivated.

Everyone has the right to be with the person of their choice
The strange thing is that just a day before Governor Anandiben Patel implemented the conversion law in UP, a bench of Justice Pankaj Naqvi and Justice Vivek Aggarwal of the Allahabad High Court gave its verdict in the case of Salamat Ansari and Priyanka Kharwar alias Alia of Kushinagar.

Court said – Everyone has the right to live with the person of his choice. Whether he is a follower of any religion. It is a matter of his personal freedom. If two people are living happily with each other, then no one has the right to object to it.

In the end, you can see in this graphic what is the law in other states regarding forced conversions.
