Construction started in January 2021
The construction of the new triangular shaped Parliament building started on 15 January 2021. This building was to be completed in November last year. PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament House on 10 December 2020. Then he had said that nothing can be more beautiful than the new building of Parliament, when India will celebrate 75 years of its independence.

Why the new building was built
The current Parliament House was built 96 years ago in 1927. In March 2020, the government told Parliament that the old building was overutilized and was deteriorating. Along with this, there is not enough space in the old building to accommodate the MPs who will increase after the new delimitation of Lok Sabha seats. For this reason a new building is being constructed.
