Shelly will be elected mayor unopposed after withdrawal of BJP candidate’s name

Just ahead of the election of the new mayor and deputy mayor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday, the BJP withdrew the names of its candidates. With this, AAP’s Shelly Oberoi was re-elected mayor.

Let us tell you that in the election for the post of Mayor, Shikha Rai was fielded by the BJP against AAP’s current Mayor Shelly Oberoi. Whereas AAP’s outgoing Deputy Mayor Aale Mohammad Iqbal was to face BJP candidate Soni Pandey. But after the withdrawal of the name of the BJP candidate, Shelly was elected mayor unopposed. AAP had absolute majority in the MCD House.

Shelly won by a margin of 34 votes
Shelly Oberoi was elected as the Mayor of Delhi on 22 February following a clash between AAP and BJP councillors. Oberoi defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes. Oberoi got 150 votes, while Gupta got 116 out of a total of 266 votes. This voting took place at the Civic Center, the headquarters of the MCD.

The city gets a new mayor after the end of the financial year. Shelly Oberoi is going to take charge of this post again.

When councilors threw bottles at each other
The process of elections for the mayor, deputy mayor and members of the standing committee of Delhi was done three months ago. As soon as the voting started in the civic center of MCD, a huge ruckus started in the headquarters. AAP-BJP members raised slogans. The atmosphere had turned so bad that some councilors climbed the barricades and started throwing bottles at each other.
