Just before the Karnataka assembly elections, politics on milk has started in the politics of the state. Actually, this controversy started when Amul announced its entry in Karnataka. On this, Congress leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah accused Amit Shah of ruining the local brand Nandini. Hashtags like Boycott Amul, Go Back Amul and Save Nandini started trending on social media. Read the full controversy in sequence…

Announcement of Amul and start of politics
Amul announced on 5th April that it will sell its products in Karnataka as well. The company wrote – A new wave of freshness is coming to Bengaluru with milk and curd. After this launch alert of Amul in Karnataka, there was a discussion in the state that the ruling BJP is trying to eliminate the Karnataka Milk Federation’s (KMF) brand Nandini through Gujarat Based Co-operative Society’s (GCMMF) Amul brand. After this hashtags like Boycott Amul, Go Back Amul and Save Nandini started trending on social media.

Opposition parties oppose Amul
The entry of Amul has been opposed by the Congress party Janata Dal Secular (JDS). Congress party in-charge in Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala said that the BJP wanted to sell the Nandini brand. The conspiracy of BJP to sell Karnataka Milk Federation to Gujarat’s Amul is now clearly visible.

Karnataka Congress Chief DK Shivakumar has told ANI that “We want to give security to our farmers and milk. We already have Nandini which is a better brand than Amul. We don’t need any Amul. Our water.. .Our milk and our soil are extremely strong.”

Amul had announced to sell its products in Karnataka on 5th April. This decision of the company is being opposed.

Former CM of Karnataka Siddaramaiah wrote – In the last few days the supply of Nandini milk and curd in the retail sector was less and now Amul is cleverly entering the market. It is clear that Amit Shah is playing a trick to help Amul and is playing a big role in destroying Nandini.

Former Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy alleged that Amul is coming with the evil idea of eliminating Nandini, its only rival in Karnataka. Kumaraswamy alleged that “one nation, one Amul, one milk and one Gujarat” has become the official policy of the central government, therefore Amul is strangling KMF by standing by it.

CM said – there are already 18 brands in the state, don’t do politics
After the uproar by the opposition, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the opposition was unnecessarily giving political color to the issue. He said that apart from Nandini, 18 different brands of milk products were being sold in the state, but no one was harmed. Congress is deliberately doing politics in the name of Amul. He said that to make Nandini the number one brand of the country, they are making them more competitive than Amul.

Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said that Karnataka's "Nandini" BJP's conspiracy to sell Gujarat's Amul has now become clear.

What does Amul have to say on the controversy
In a reply to the Financial Express, GCMMF Managing Director Jayen Mehta said that he is aware of the Twitter storm over the brand’s entry in Karnataka. Amul will currently sell only through e-commerce/quick commerce channel and is not focusing on general trade. Since for normal trade we will have to bring down the prices of brand products and there is no such plan as of now. Amul’s entry in Karnataka will be possible only after 6 months.

Karnataka’s largest milk brand supplying 23 lakh liters of milk
Nandini supplies more than 23 lakh liters of milk every day. Nandini alone meets 70% of the milk consumption requirement in the Bengaluru market. There is also a huge difference in the prices of Nandini’s milk as compared to Amul’s. A liter of Nandini milk costs Rs 39, while a liter packet of Amul toned milk costs Rs 54.
