Badarka village is about 12 kilometers away from Unnao city. The total population is about three and a half thousand. The inscriptions on the sides of both the main roads of the village have Chandrashekhar Azad Griha Marg written on them. Because this village is the maternal grandfather of Chandrashekhar. People here claim that Chandrashekhar was born here. But his birthplace is recorded on the Internet as Bhabra village in Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh.

After parking the car at Badarka Chowki, we reached inside the village through narrow lanes. When people were asked about the maternal condition of Chandrashekhar Azad, they could not understand at all. After some time the answer was received, “Oh! You are talking about a revolutionary. Here Chandrashekhar is not called Azad ji.” After this, we reached the house of Jayarani Devi, mother of Chandu alias Chandrashekhar Sitaram Tiwari, following the routes told by him. The house was locked. But nearby we met Rajan Shukla.

Rajan is Jairani Devi’s neighbor and now he is handling the legacy here. Whether taking care of Chandrashekhar’s idols or organizing a fair on his birth anniversary, Rajan sees everything. He told us some interesting stories. Let us know some stories from Azad’s childhood.

Rajan shows us Chandrashekhar’s birth certificate and says, “It mentions Azadji’s date of birth as January 7, 1906 and the same Badarka village as his place of birth. Not only our father Brij Kishore Shukla but also his father Azadji’s legacy handling.” Rajan explains, “As long as Azadji’s mother Jayrani Devi was alive, there was no dispute about her birthplace. But, as soon as she passed away in 1951, her birthplace was changed.”

British officer’s head was smashed with a stone
Rajan tells us, “Chandu alias Chandrasekhar must have been around 9 years old. He was returning after studying at the Madrasa in this village. Chandu picked up a stone from nearby and hurled it. The stone hit the British officer directly on the head and he groaned in pain.”

Chandu came running home. The officer followed and reached home and started abusing Chandu’s father Sitaram Tiwari. Chandu came out of the house and said to the officer, “The person you were killing is like my grandfather. I cannot see him being killed.”

In the village where Azadji’s mother Jagrani Devi used to live, a temple has been made by installing her idol there. This work was done by former UP CM ND Tiwari. Indira Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister of the country, had come here in 1966. He had said at that time, “I am blessed to have come to Badarka today on Azad’s birthday. The soil here has given birth to a male gem like Chandrashekhar Azad. This holy land is the pilgrimage of all pilgrimages. I bow down.”

The parents thought that Azad had been eaten by a tiger.
Rajan narrates another anecdote related to Chandrasekhar, when Azad ji was 11 years old, he went from here to Alirajpur in MP along with his father Sitaram Tiwari. It was an area surrounded by forests. That’s why Azad did not like it there. One day he eloped with a merchant who sold nagina and went to Mumbai. Didn’t even tell anyone. The family members searched as long as they could and then assumed that Azad was eaten by a tiger in the jungle itself.

But Chandrashekhar was alive. He initially worked as a ship painter at the ports of Mumbai. But after a few days, he started working in a hotel serving food and washing dishes. One day Nand Kishore Gupta, a teacher of the Banaras Sanskrit School, came to that hotel to have dinner. When he saw Chandrashekhar, he understood that this child belongs to a good family. He took her with him to Banaras. Chandrasekhar started living here. At that time Gandhiji’s non-cooperation movement was at its peak. He was very impressed.

Chandrashekhar became ‘free’ after being lashed for 15 years
One day Azad along with his companions took out a rally with the flag in hand. When they reached the Godaulia crossroads of Banaras, the English officer said, throw down the flag. You become children and study. Azad said, will throw you but will not throw the flag. The British surrounded and caught him and presented him before the magistrate.

Magistrate asked: What is your name? Chandrashekhar said: Azad Magistrate asked: What is your father’s name? Chandrasekhar said: Freedom Magistrate asked: What is your address? Chandrasekhar said: Jail food

The magistrate got angry and sentenced 15-year-old Azad to 15 lashes. Chandrashekhar used to say ‘Bharat Maa ki Jai’ whenever the whip fell on the back. The whole back turned red with blood but his enthusiasm did not diminish. The result was that one day a crowd of thousands gathered in Banaras to see him. Chandrashekhar was made to stand on the table only then the public could see.

Once Chandrashekhar came to Kanpur from Jhansi after getting involved in revolutionary activities. Mahavir Prasad was also with him. At that time none of the revolutionary friends knew that Azad’s house was in Badarka village across the river Ganges. One day he crossed the river with Mahavira and reached home. When I knocked on the door, Maa Jagrani came out. On seeing the son, she started crying hugging her. Azad said, Mother is hungry. Jagrani ran to the neighbor’s house and brought three breads and vegetables. Azad ate two rotis and Mahavir ate one.

When Azad started walking, the mother again hugged him and said, son, don’t go now. Azad pushed the mother and made her fall. Mahavir was surprised to see this. He said, what are you doing Azad? She is your mother. Azad said, Mahavir, there are lakhs of such mothers who are yearning for their children. We have to free Mother India for them. Let’s go from here now. Saying this he left the spot. Mother kept watching with tears in her eyes.

On February 27, 1931, Azad shot himself so that the British could not catch him alive.

After leaving the house, Azad took part in the Kakori incident. To avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai shot the British police officer. British officers started searching for Azad at various places. But Azad did not come to his hands. February 27, 1931 was the day. Azad was hiding in Prayagraj’s Alfred Park along with Sukhdev and a friend. They were planning what to do next. During this, Azad had an argument with his friend about something.

To avenge this, that friend told the British about Azad being hidden in Alfred Park. The British reached that park with the entire battalion. They surrounded the park from all sides and started firing. Azad had only a pistol and counted bullets.

Azad fought with the British for 20 minutes. At last there was only one bullet left in the pistol. Azad remembered his oath that he would die but would never come into the hands of the British while alive. Azad shot himself that last bullet and fulfilled his oath. While leaving, he spoke a lion…
“We will face the bullets of the enemy, we have been free, we will remain free.”
