Owaisi said that the Assam government should think about those girls who have been married.

The executive meeting of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board was held on Sunday in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. In this, the issue of arrests related to child marriage in Assam also came up. The board members said that the Assam Police should immediately stop the arrests.

In the matter, AIMIM Chief Owaisi asked the government that what will you do with those girls who have been married? Along with this, he said that the Assam government has been accused of favoring Muslims.

Those who are married should also be taken care of by the Assam government.
On the issue of child marriage, Owaisi said that the Assam government has registered four thousand cases. Now the government should think about those girls who have been married. Because after this, how will they survive from their care is a big question. The party has been in power in the state for 6 years. What has he done all these years to stop child marriage? This is the failure of the state government. At present it is not possible to implement Uniform Civil Code.

More than 2 thousand people arrested in 3 days
Against child marriage in Assam, 2 thousand 278 people have been arrested from 10 districts in the last 3 days. These include priests-maulvis of both Hindu and Muslim communities who conduct such marriages. The police say that they have a list of a total of 8,000 people. Women left behind after the arrest of such a large number of men are forced to face difficulties.

The joy of becoming a mother is not in Nimi’s eyes, but fear and insecurity. There is an emptiness in Regina’s eyes. She is trying to understand how her happy-go-lucky world has turned upside down in a flash. This is the condition of most of the women living in Morigaon district of Assam. Read two stories…

The first story of Nimi: Police came at two o’clock in the night and took away the husband, where should I go with the one and a half month old child…

Nimi is among thousands of child brides whose husbands have been arrested in the last two days by the Assam Police as part of a state-wide drive against child marriage. Nimi told- There was a knock on the door at around 2 o’clock on Thursday night. When the door was opened, the policemen were standing outside. They came inside and took her husband away.

He said – Our one and a half month old son kept crying, but he did not agree. Where will I go with this innocent. Nimi, 17, eloped and married Gopal Biswas, who is 20 years old. She along with her husband used to earn a living by selling pakoras at the village square.

Why didn’t the government warn earlier?
Gopal’s elder brother Yudhishthira lives nearby with his parents. He told- I hardly earn enough to take care of my family. Who will take care of Nimi and her son? She has not eaten anything since her husband’s arrest. The child is also getting sick now. Yudhishthir said- The government should have warned us earlier.

Police have arrested 2,258 people till Saturday.

The second story of Regina: Daughter-in-law’s age is less in Aadhaar; What is the son’s fault in this, why was he arrested

Rajibul Hussain was picked up from home at around 6 pm on Thursday. He had returned home with his father from Kerala just minutes ago. His mother Regina tells – the son had a love marriage. Whoever talks to Regina she tells him- My daughter-in-law is not young, but there was some mistake in her Aadhaar card, due to which my son is in jail today. Now the daughter-in-law is going round the native place to get her birth record.

Mistakes in Aadhaar of many people
Neighbors of Regina’s family claimed that many people like Rajibul’s wife were not minors at the time of marriage, but their date of birth was wrongly recorded while enrolling for Aadhaar card. They claim that the police took data from local health workers, which is false. Now, we are helping these women to get their original birth records, so that their husbands can get bail.

Many girls living in shelter home
While some are getting help and support from their families in this case, many like Riya Devi are at the mercy of the authorities following the arrest of their husbands. 16-year-old Riya, living in a shelter home run by the government, said – Husband is my everything, because we had eloped and got married. Now where do I go with my one year old daughter from here?

Rupa (16), 9 months pregnant, living in the shelter home, said – free my husband. We had a consensual marriage. What would I do without them now?

Campaign will continue till 2026
The state cabinet had on January 23 decided to arrest the culprits. In less than 15 days, the police registered 4,004 cases of child marriage. Apart from this, an awareness campaign was also launched regarding child marriage. On the other hand, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says that the campaign against child marriage will continue till the next assembly elections to be held in 2026.

Why did the government take this decision?
The report of the National Family Health Survey had come out regarding child marriage. It was found that Assam has the highest maternal-infant mortality rate. Child marriage was said to be the main reason for this. According to the report, the maximum number of 370 cases of child marriage were registered in Dhubri district of Assam.

Whereas, 255 cases have been registered in Hojai and 235 in Udalguri, 224 in Morigaon and 204 in Kokrajhar. Dima Hasao recorded 24 cases, Cachar 35 and Hailakandi district reported only one case of child marriage. After this report came out, in January 2023, the government decided to take strict action against the cases of child marriage in the cabinet meeting.

Action was also started on this from 3rd January. A total of 2278 people have been arrested so far. Of these, 139 people have been arrested from Vishwanath, 130 from Barpeta, 126 from Dhubri, 123 from Baksa, 117 from Bongaigaon, 101 from Nagaon, 94 from Kokrajhar, 85 from Kamrup, 84 each from Goalpara and Udalguri districts.
