A 16-year-old pregnant girl died after delivery in Assam. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has targeted the Chief Minister of the state Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding this. He wrote on Twitter that the state government is responsible for the death of the girl. Because of their foolish move, pregnant girls are not going to the hospital for delivery. Due to this the mother of the newborn died and his father is in jail.

According to the news agency ANI, the Congress MP said that we have come to know that a 16-year-old mother died in Bongaigaon. She gave birth to a child at home. An ASHA was present at the spot, the family did not take her to the hospital for delivery. When the girl’s health deteriorated due to excessive bleeding after delivery. Then the relatives started taking her to the hospital, but the girl died on the way.

Congress MP claims that pregnant women below 18 years of age in Assam are giving birth at home. She is afraid to go to the hospital as her husband and father will be arrested if the age of the girls is known.

On the other hand, amidst the ongoing action against child marriage in Assam, the government has formed a committee to finalize the rehabilitation policy for child marriage victims. After receiving the report of the committee, the cabinet will take a decision on the rehabilitation policy. CM informed about this by tweeting on Thursday. At the same time, he praised the police for the campaign against child marriage and instructed to continue this campaign.

Assam Police has so far arrested 2,763 people in cases related to child marriage across the state. At the same time, more than 4000 cases have been registered. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that 6,20,867 women became pregnant in the state last year. Of these, 1,04,264 i.e. 17% adolescent girls of 19 years of age or less were found pregnant.

The government became strict after a report surfaced
The report of the National Family Health Survey had come out regarding child marriage. In which it was found that the mother-infant mortality rate is the highest in Assam. Child marriage was said to be the main reason for this. According to the report, the maximum number of 370 cases of child marriage were registered in Dhubri district of Assam. Whereas, 255 cases have been registered in Hojai and 235 in Udalguri, 224 in Morigaon and 204 in Kokrajhar.

Dima Hasao recorded 24 cases, Cachar 35 and Hailakandi district reported only one case of child marriage. After this report came out, in January 2023, the government had decided to take strict action against the cases of child marriage in the cabinet meeting.
