According to ZC, the bookie wanted the player to bowl in a pre-arranged manner during an international match in exchange for money.

Harare, February 18 (Language) Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) on Saturday said it has banned a “fan” for five years from all cricket venues and events in the country for trying to involve an international player in a spot-fixing deal with an Indian bookie.

The fan in question, 27-year-old Edward Walter Mupangano from Harare, had approached fast bowler Luke Jongwe last August seeking to introduce him to an Indian bookie.

According to ZC, the bookie wanted the player to bowl in a pre-arranged manner during an international match in exchange for money.

“Edward Walter Mupangano, a 27-year-old cricket fan from Harare who also had a trial with a local club in the past, was sanctioned after contacting Luke Jongwe on 4 August 2022 and seeking to introduce him to an Indian bookie . ZC, in a statement, allegedly wanted the player to bowl in a pre-arranged manner during an international match in return for a payment of US$7,000.

“If the planned corrupt activity is successful, the facilitator himself will allegedly receive US$3,000.”

The board said, but Jongwe immediately reported the contact to the authorities.

Following an investigation, Mupangano admitted breaching Zimbabwe Cricket’s Anti-Corruption Code and was banned from all ZC-affiliated cricket venues and events for five years.

The 28-year-old Jongwe has played one Test, 37 ODIs and 45 T20Is for Zimbabwe since making his debut in 2014.
