PARIS, France – Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky referred to “Star Wars” and World War II as he sought aid from big tech firms in the form of holograms at a conference in Paris on Thursday.
He told a crowd of hundreds at the VivaTech trade show that Ukraine is offering technology firms a unique opportunity to rebuild the country as a fully digital democracy.
He sought help on lend-lease terms—the way the United States helped the Allies during World War II, offering aid without payment, but on the understanding that the hardware would be returned.
“It’s unusual for presidents or heads of government to use holograms to address people, but it’s not the only aspect of ‘Star Wars’ that we’re putting into practice,” he said.
“We’ll beat the Empire too,” he said, comparing the Russian army to the bad guys in the “Star Wars” franchise.
He said the government would lay out the specifics of its plans to form a digital government at a conference in Switzerland in the coming weeks.
