According to the police, Sharmila has been taken to Hyderabad to avoid law and order problems in Mahabubabad. A case has also been registered against him.

YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) chief YS Sharmila was detained in Telangana’s Mahabubabad district on Sunday morning for allegedly making inappropriate remarks against Mahabubabad MLA Shankar Naik.

According to the police, Sharmila has been taken to Hyderabad to avoid law and order problems in Mahabubabad. A case has also been registered against him. Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) workers also protested against Sharmila’s comments in Mahabubabad district.

Sharmila had on Friday challenged BRS MLA Shankar Naik to stop him from undertaking a padyatra, following which clashes broke out between YSRCP cadre and BRS workers. The clashes forced them to stop their march. The BRS MLA had earlier targeted him and accused him of being a migrant and an outsider. Sharmila reportedly called him ‘shameless’ in response

This is not the first time that the sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has been detained. In December 2022 alone, he was detained by the police three times. He had also started a fast unto death last year after the Telangana government denied permission for his padyatra.

After a break, Sharmila resumed her padyatra in Warangal district in the first week of February after the state government tried to stop the padyatra several times.

YS Sharmila has been on a padayatra in Telangana since last October. She has covered a distance of over 3,000 km, talking to people along the way. During the initial stages of his padyatra, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) workers allegedly set his bus on fire. He was arrested by the police after he refused to call off the march in view of the tense situation at that time.

Sharmila continued to attack the K Chandrasekhar Rao government for obstructing her march even after the High Court had given permission. “Is this democracy or Afghanistan? Is this the golden Telangana that KCR often refers to, where our fundamental rights are trampled under the iron feet of abusive government machinery? He said last year.
