The TMC leader also questioned the progress of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the investigation of the rape-murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9

Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday said his party would hold protests on Delhi streets if the Centre did not introduce anti-rape laws in India. He also said TMC did not need lessons on women’s safety from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) citing atrocities against women in saffron party-ruled Manipur.

Speaking at the 27th foundation day of the West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, the student wing of his party, Abhishek Banerjee said, “If a time-bound legislation pertaining to the crimes against women is not passed by the Centre in the next 3-4 months, then TMC will hold a big movement in Delhi,” adding, BJP started it, but TMC will end it.

He said his party did not need lessons on women’s safety from the BJP and added, “In Manipur two, Adivasi women were paraded naked. I dare Sukanta and Suvendu (Bengal BJP leaders) if they have the guts, they should demand the resignation of Manipur CM Biren Singh.”

The TMC leader also questioned the progress of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the investigation of the rape-murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 and said, “14 days have passed. What has the CBI done? CBI has not solved any case from Nobel theft to Sarada, they have done nothing.”

Abhishek Banerjee said, “We oppose the 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh’ called by BJP.”

BJP Workers Clash with Police Amid Bandh Call

BJP workers clashed with the police at several places across West Bengal on Wednesday as they tried to enforce a 12-hour shutdown in the state. Several BJP leaders, including former Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly and MLA Agnimitra Paul, were detained for blocking roads and railway tracks since the early morning.

The ‘Bangla Bandh’, which began at 6 am, was called by the BJP in protest against Tuesday’s police action on participants of ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ or march to the secretariat, organised by the newly formed students’ group Chatra Samaj over the rape and murder of the doctor at RG Kar hospital.

The shutdown partially affected daily life in the state with many people choosing to remain indoors apprehending trouble on the roads.

In state capital Kolkata, the usual weekday flurry was missing with a lesser number of buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis plying. Private vehicles were also significantly less, even as markets and shops remained open.

Schools and colleges were open, though the number of students was lesser. In many private offices, attendance was low with employees asked to work from home. However, attendance was as usual in government offices.
