‘Your name will be among the best leaders’: Viv Richards praises Virat Kohli

Former West Indies captain and batting great Sir Vivian Richards has congratulated Virat Kohli for a wonderful stint as India’s Test captain. The latter on Saturday made the shocking decision to step down from his post after the 1-2 Test series loss in South Africa. The Delhi-born cricketer took to his social media handle to make the announcement.

Responding to Kohli’s tweet, Sir Richards said the former India captain can be ‘proud’ of what he has achieved in the last seven years as Test captain. He said that Kohli’s name will always be among the best leaders of the world of cricket.

“Congratulations @imVkohli for a great performance as Indian captain. You can be very proud of what you have achieved so far, and surely your name will be among the best leaders of world cricket,” he tweeted.

Kohli’s statement on social media:

Virat said in his social media post that at some point or the other, everything has to stop and it is time to step down from the Test captaincy. He also mentioned the efforts and hard work put in to shape the team over the years.

“The journey has had many ups and downs, but there has never been a lack of effort or lack of faith. I have always believed in giving my 120 per cent to everything I do, and if I can’t do it, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest towards my team,” said Kohli.

Kohli further thanked the BCCI, teammates and former captain MS Dhoni for their support to lead the team in the longest format of the game.

“I want to thank BCCI for giving me the opportunity to lead my country for so long and more importantly, all those teammates who have been there for the team from day one and no matter what the situation. I never gave up. ,

“You guys have made this journey so memorable and beautiful. To Ravi bhai and the support group who were the engines behind this vehicle that consistently propelled us upwards in Test cricket, you all have played a big part in bringing this vision to life. Finally, a big thank you to MS Dhoni, who believed in me as a captain and found me to be a capable man who could take Indian cricket forward,” concluded Kohli.

Kohli’s Test captaincy record:

Kohli has an impeccable record as the Test captain of India. The team played 68 matches under his leadership and won 40 of them. India lost 17 matches while 11 matches were drawn. He remains undefeated at home, winning every series in which he captained the team.
