Donald Trump said he had a nice chat with Joe Biden in the phone call the latter made after Trump survived an attempt on his life.

Donald Trump, in a newly aired interview, revealed what US President Joe Biden told him shortly after he survived an attempt on his life at a Pennsylvania campaign rally.

“He said, ‘You’re lucky you turned to the right,’” Trump told US broadcaster Fox News’s Jesse Watters. The former president narrowly escaped death as he turned his head to look at a chart displayed on a big screen when 20-year-old Thomas Crooks opened fire during the rally.

He said he had a “nice chat” with his successor.

He also refused to be carried off stage on a stretcher, he told the broadcaster.

“They had a stretcher, and they wanted to put me on a stretcher. And I said, ‘I’m not going on a stretcher,’” he said.

“I just felt it was the ear, there was a lot of blood,” Trump said, referring to what may have alarmed the US Secret Service agents who have been criticised for the security lapse.

Trump said he met with embattled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.

“She came to see me, actually. She was very nice, I thought. But, you know, somebody should have made sure there was nobody on that roof,” he said, while adding that he initially believed he was hit in the abdomen when the shots rang out.
