Yasin Malik, sentenced to life imprisonment by a special NIA court in Delhi on Wednesday, will now have to spend the rest of his life in jail “absolutely alone”. The Kashmiri separatist has been kept in jail number 7 of Tihar Jail. He is kept alone inside the prison, away from the outside world, away from some 13,000 inmates.

According to Director General (Prisons) Sandeep Goel, Yasin Malik is alone in his cell.

“He is already in jail number 7 and will remain there at present. He is alone in his cell,” Goyal said.

During the last hearing, Malik told the court that he was not contesting the charges leveled against him. He cannot even challenge the sentence in the high courts as he has pleaded guilty, which means that Malik will spend the rest of his life in jail.

Rigorous imprisonment generally means increasing the difficulty of the prison term by subjecting the offender to special arrangements in prison, depending on the nature of the offence.

However, despite the court’s order, Malik will not be given any work inside the jail.

“He will not be assigned work at all due to security reasons,” a top prison official said, adding that the work is subject to security concerns and the decision is taken as per prison rules.

According to Yasin Malik’s prison conduct report, his conduct inside the jail has been satisfactory. Prison records show that no sentence has been filed against him.

The sentencing order said, “With regard to the inclination of the offender towards reformation, it is submitted that during the imprisonment, the behavior of the offender towards the co-inmates as well as the jail administration has been cordial and peaceful. The criminal seems to be inclined towards reform.”

Tihar Jail No. 7

Jail number 7 of Tihar Jail has always been in the limelight as it houses many high-profile inmates, including former finance minister P. Chidambaram, former Union Minister A Raja, Sahara chief Subrata Roy, Christian Michel among many others.

On 12 October, 32 officials of Tihar Jail were found to be in collusion with former promoters of Unitech.

It is alleged that Chandra brothers Ajay Chandra and Sanjay Chandra were doing business from inside Tihar Jail in connivance with the jail staff. The interesting thing is that all the above 32 jail officers were posted in Jail No 7 of Tihar.

Meanwhile, sources said that the Tihar authorities have beefed up security outside Malik’s ward in jail number 7.

“They will be kept under maximum security cover,” the sources said.

He also informed that the convicted terrorist will always be under surveillance through CCTV cameras.
