Born in a Chitraguptvanshi Kayastha family of Patna, Bihar, Yashwant Sinha’s early education took place in Hindi medium. When Sinha went to Patna University for college studies, the biggest challenge before him was to get hold of English as all subjects were taught in English here.
To overcome this challenge, Sinha adopted several methods, including group discussions, and finally earned a master’s (post-graduate) degree in Political Science in 1958 with good grades. After this he taught at Patna University till 1960.

Yashwant Sinha joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1960 and spent more than 24 years in the service, holding several important positions during his tenure. For 4 years he served as Sub-Divisional Magistrate and District Magistrate. After being an Under Secretary and Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Government of Bihar, he worked as a Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India.

Yashwant Sinha resigned from the post of IAS in 1984 and entered politics after joining the Janata Party. After this, he worked as the Finance Minister in the Chandrashekhar government formed for some time. Later he joined BJP. In the year 1996, the national spokesperson of the party, then the Finance Minister and Foreign Minister in the Atal government. But when Narendra Modi’s government was formed, Sinha started criticizing the government publicly, after which he had to leave the party. However, his son Jayant Sinha is still in the BJP.
