Xiaomi launched several phones in 2020 that offered 5G support on the hardware but were never network enabled.

Xiaomi has provided 5G support for most of its compatible smartphones in India, but there are question marks about some older Mi and Redmi phones that support 5G on hardware but haven’t been enabled yet.

Now, the company says it will make sure 5G works on those models as well, which is welcome news for owners. Xiaomi launched the Mi 10 series a few years back, and the company is now ensuring that it will support 5G networks through their SIMs via an upcoming software update.

Interestingly, Xiaomi has taken a long time to share the update for the Mi 10 series users. While many shared their displeasure about the company’s silence regarding 5G plans for its phones, 5G services (both standalone and non-standalone) are now available in over 3000 cities in the country.

The update will be rolled out over-the-air (OTA) for the Mi 10, Mi 10i, Mi 10T, and Mi 10T Pro, following which owners of these phones will get 5G support as long as it’s available in their region. The update timeline for these phones has not been mentioned and Xiaomi has just revealed that the update will be rolled out soon.

Some of these Mi phones from Xiaomi were launched in India before the 5G bands were finalised. So offering an update that will support these 5G bands ensures that consumers continue to use their phones for a few more years.

Having said that, with Xiaomi focusing its attention on software updates for older devices, it has been slow to offer new OS versions. With that in mind, we’re not sure if the upcoming 5G support for these phones will also have some level of security patch, so that any mishaps caused by software updates can be easily remedied.
