Wyoming beat Kent St. 52-38 in the famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Boise, Idaho: Levi Williams ran for 200 yards and four touchdowns and covered 127 yards and another touchdown helped Wyoming win over Kent State in a 52-38 win at the famed Idaho Potato Bowl on Tuesday.

Williams, who set a career-best single-game rushing performance, tied the Potato Bowl record for fastest touchdown and was named MVP.

Kent State (7–7), playing in their fifth bowl game in school history, went out with a 17–7 lead and took a 24–21 advantage at halftime, but the Golden Flashes were defeated by Wyoming’s relentless pace attack. Couldn’t stand against

Wyoming (7–6) scored 21 consecutive points to start the second half, including 27 and 80 yards by Williams to lead 42–24, which proved too much for Kent State.

Wyoming senior linebacker Chad Muma and a Boutkes Award finalist did not disappoint in their final college game, leading the Cowboys on defense with 13 tackles and a half sack.

The Cowboys set the Potato Bowl team’s record for rushing 404 yards, while the two teams combined set a Potato Bowl record for rushing 723 yards.

takeaway

Wyoming: The Cowboys quarterback position has been a tug of war between Sean Chambers and Williams over the past two seasons. But Williams, who was named a starter in the middle of the season, will have a stranglehold on when to go into spring practice.

Kent State: The Golden Flashes had no trouble moving the football, taking the offense for 656 yards. However, after holding Wyoming for 216 yards in the first half, the Kent States defense weakened in the second half, being pushed around by the more physical Wyoming offensive line.

next session

Kent State: Fourth-year coach Sean Lewis returned most of the offensive pieces the following season, which the Golden Flashes had done since the 1950s to complete the season without a loss for four consecutive years. Leading rusher Marquez Cooper and top receiver Dante Cephas, who combined for 2,294 yards of total offense this year, returned for their junior season. Colin Schlie is expected to take over as quarterback after senior Dustin Crum has exhausted all his eligibility. The defense presents a major challenge for Lewis, who returns just four players but includes key tackler Dean Clarke.

Wyoming: As Craig Bohl enters his ninth season at Wyoming, he will have to piece together an almost entirely new offensive line with only one starter returning. But his defensive unit started eight, there would still be a huge hole to fill with the departure of Mumas.

Wyoming will begin next season in Illinois on August 27.

Kent State opened its 2022 campaign in Washington on September 3.
