Wrestlers Protest LIVE Updates: Protest Enters Day 3 as Late Night Meeting with Sports Minister Inconclusive

The marathon meeting started at around 10 pm on Thursday, the second day of the wrestlers’ dharna against the wrestling federation president. The wrestlers left Thakur’s residence at 1.45 am and did not speak to the waiting reporters outside. According to government officials, the wrestlers will again meet the Sports Minister on Friday.

Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia, Ravi Dahiya, Sakshi Malik and World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat were part of the meeting. Thakur left Himachal Pradesh for Delhi after earlier meetings between government officials and protesting wrestlers proved inconclusive.

The ministry cannot force Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to resign until it gets a written reply from the WFI as the government itself has sought clarification from the wrestling body.

The WFI is yet to respond to the Sports Ministry, which on Wednesday gave the wrestling body 72 hours to respond to allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation by its president, several women athletes.

According to sources, the government wants the wrestlers to end their protest but the athletes are adamant that the WFI should be dissolved first. “The government can resolve other issues later. We are fine with it, but it should first dissolve the WFI. PTI This has been said by quoting a source close to the wrestlers.

A team of wrestlers including Bajrang, Vinesh, Anshu Malik, Sakshi and her husband Satyavrat Kadian met government officials on Thursday and discussed their issues with Sports Secretary Sujata Chaturvedi and Sports Authority of India Director General Sandeep Pradhan.

During the hour-long meeting, the wrestlers were asked to end their strike and assured that their grievances would be addressed. Former wrestler and BJP leader Babita Phogat was also part of the meeting to break the impasse.
