BCCI is all set to conduct the first ever Women’s Premier League players auction on 13th February. A total of 1525 players have registered for the WPL Player Auction. Only 409 players made it to the final list. Out of 409 players that will be auctioned, 246 are Indian and 163 are foreign players, including 8 players from associate countries.
Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriors are the five franchises.
For the inaugural season of the WPL, each franchise has an auction purse of INR 12 crore (approximately US$1.46 million).
Capped players had the option of choosing their base price in these brackets – Rs 30 lakh, Rs 40 lakh or Rs 50 lakh. The base price of uncapped players is Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh.
Five teams can fill a maximum of 90 slots in the auction. As each team can have six foreign players, there can be 30 non-Indian players who get a coveted WPL contract. Teams can avail the option of including a fifth overseas player in their playing XI, provided he is from an associate nation. Therefore, teams now have an incentive to select an associate player.
Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, Ashleigh Gardner, Ellyse Perry, Meg Lanning and Alyssa Healy will be on the radar of the franchise. All these players are T20 specialists and they are expected to fetch huge amount in the auction.
The WPL Player Auction is being pitched as an appetizer before the main event and the upcoming event has created tremendous buzz among the cricket lovers.
