World record holder athlete Agnes Tirope dies after being stabbed in Kenya

The world athletics community was in shock on Thursday as reports emerged from Kenya of the death of world 10,000m bronze medalist Agnes Tirope, who was found dead at her home in an apparently stabbing incident. According to a statement from Athletics Kenya, 25-year-old Tirope was found dead at her home in Iten after she was allegedly stabbed by her husband. Reports say police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident that happened just a month after Tirope competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

“We are still working to find out more details about his passing,” Athletics Kenya said in its statement on Wednesday evening.

“Kenya has lost a jewel, having been one of the fas1cs1-rising athletics giants on the international s1age. Thank you for his fascinating performance on the track.

“Just last month, she broke the women’s only record in the 1he women’s 1Okm at the Road to Records race in Germany. Time 30:01. Last week, she finished an impressive second in the Valencia Half Marathon in a time of 30:20, The statement from Athletics Kenya said.

Tirope’s decorated CV also includes the 2015 World Cross Country title, during which she made history as the second-youngest medalist at that level.

He also won the 2014 Africa Cross Country Championships in Kampala, Uganda, as well as the 2013 World Junior Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Tirope, a two-time world medalist and world record holder, had tried to add an Olympic medal to her resume, but finished fourth. She came close to adding an Olympic medal to her resume, finishing fourth in the 5,000m at Tokyo 2020.

Since returning from Tokyo, Tirope fell 28 seconds short of the previous 10km road race record and posted an impressive time of 30:20 at last week’s Valencia Half Marathon.

“Athletics have lost one of their brightest young stars under the most tragic circumstances,” said Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics.

At just 19 years old, world cross country champion Agnes Jabet Tirope exploded onto the global scene in 2015 and has been one of the best female distance runners in the world over the past six years.

“This is a terrible blow to the entire athletics community, but especially to his family, his friends and Athletics Kenya and I send them my heartfelt condolences,” he said.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened. Our prayers and thoughts with the family. Rest in peace, champions (with folded hands),” the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) tweeted.
