World No Tobacco Day 2022: Theme, History and Significance

World No Tobacco Day 2022: World No Tobacco Day is an annual event held on 31 May each year as part of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). It highlights the negative impacts of tobacco and its industry on human health and the environment and alerts people to the steps they can take to protect themselves and the environment from tobacco. Below, we look at the theme, history, and significance of the event.

World No Tobacco Day 2022: Theme

The theme of this year’s World No Tobacco Day is “Tobacco: A Threat to Our Environment”, as stated on the UNEP website. Tobacco affects the health of countless people across the planet as well as the environment at large.

The smoke emanating from cigarettes and cigars does not stain people’s teeth only by chewing tobacco. The highly addictive substance contains nicotine, which causes cancer, diseases of the heart, lungs and liver. Tobacco production harms the environment through the use of pesticides and deforestation.

World No Tobacco Day: History

As stated in the official WHO website, it was the year 1987 when WHO member states created World No Tobacco Day. In the same year a resolution was passed by the World Health Assembly to create a World No Smoking Day. The following year, another resolution was passed by the same body to establish 31 May as World No Tobacco Day. The annual and global celebration has continued ever since.

Each year the campaign focuses on tobacco use and the major impact of the tobacco trade, with the ultimate objective of weaning people off their dependence on the product. This year, the focus is on how tobacco poisons our planet and its environment.

World No Tobacco Day: Significance

The campaign highlights the harmful effects of tobacco on both active and passive smokers. It also underscores how tobacco cultivation is harming our soil and water through the use of pesticides. Cigarette filters contain microplastics that are often improperly disposed, leading to the accumulation of such toxic, man-made and non-biodegradable materials in the environment. Issues like these make organizing extremely important.
