World No Tobacco Day 2022: How tobacco smoke can affect your lungs, heart and fertility

World No Tobacco Day 2022: Despite the known harmful effects of smoking on health in general and the male reproductive system in particular, tobacco use is increasing rapidly among people of all age groups. In addition to endangering your cardiovascular and respiratory health, tobacco content negatively affects sperm parameters, seminal plasma and other reproductive factors.

Tobacco users also have a higher risk of developing cancer. No Tobacco Day is observed across the world on 31 May every year to spread awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use.

fertility

The US Food and Drug Administration, also known as the FDA, has said in a report that cigarette smoking can have negative health effects on fertility, making it difficult to conceive. It can also negatively affect hormone production, with further smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke causing damage to a person’s reproductive system. In addition, smoking can also damage the DNA in sperm.

According to the World Health Organization, “Environmental and lifestyle factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption can affect fertility, resulting in reduced numbers and poor quality, leading to infertility.”

Smoking also increases the risk of cancer:

  • mouth
  • larynx (voice box)
  • pharynx (throat)
  • esophagus
  • Kidney
  • uterine cervix
  • Liver
  • urinary bladder
  • pancreas
  • Abdomen
  • colon / rectum

effects on the lungs

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), smoking damages the airways and the small alveoli of the lungs. As soon as someone starts smoking, the damage begins, and lung function only keeps getting worse. It can take years for the problem to become noticeable for a lung disease diagnosis.

Smoke damage to the lungs can cause serious long-term lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It also increases the risk of lung infections such as pneumonia and tuberculosis. If you suffer from asthma, smoking is a big no-no as the condition can get worse.

Heart Brains

Tobacco use damages the heart and blood vessels – in short, the entire cardiovascular system. This increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Smoking elevates your blood pressure, reduces your ability to exercise, and causes your blood to clot. Smoking also lowers the level of HDL (good) cholesterol in the blood. And, all of these risk factors lead to heart attacks and strokes.

impotence

Smoking can also increase the risk of erectile dysfunction, which is a condition in which a man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for intercourse.
