International Day for Monuments and Sites or commonly known as World Heritage Day is celebrated to encourage communities and individuals to recognize the value of cultural heritage. To protect and preserve monuments and historical sites and also recognize the rich heritage associated with them. The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), based in Paris, is behind the opening of the day.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated a total of 1155 monuments as World Heritage Sites in 167 countries.
The theme of the year – Heritage and Climate – is to open a dialogue about climate justice and equality to protect heritage. It is also an opportunity to discuss ways to achieve equal protection for vulnerable communities.
ICOMOS stated that the day “provides a timely opportunity to demonstrate strategies to promote the full potential of heritage conservation research and practice in order to strengthen sustainable development while advocating for just the transition to low-carbon futures.” to provide a climate-resilient route.”
