World Heart Day 2021: Theme, History and Significance

Every year 29 September is observed as World Heart Day to raise awareness about heart disease, heart disease and stroke. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 17 million people worldwide die from heart disease every year. The leading cause of these deaths is coronary heart disease or stroke. The day is observed to make individuals aware about the prevention and control of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). Every year, more than 90 countries participate in this international event. Government and non-governmental organizations organize public events and concerts to raise public awareness about CVD.

World Heart Day: History

The day was first observed on 24 September 2000 by the World Heart Federation in collaboration with the World Health Organization. The idea of ​​celebrating this day was conceived by Antoine Bey de Luna, former President of the World Health Federation. This day was celebrated on the last Sunday from September to 2011.

However, since 2012, it has been celebrated on 29 September when world leaders have pledged to reduce the global mortality rate from these non-communicable diseases by 25% by 2025.

World Health Day 2021: Theme

Every year this day is celebrated with a special theme. The theme of this year’s World Health Day is ‘Harnessing the power of digital health to improve awareness, prevention and management of CVD globally’.

World Heart Day 2021: Significance

Established by WHF and WHO, the day is observed to inform people about various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) that can cause serious health damage. Various CVDs, including heart attacks and strokes, are the leading causes of death. Around 18.6 million people are estimated to be affected by CVD worldwide each year.

The day also aims to highlight the causes and prevention of CVD, so that people can save themselves from getting heart diseases. It is marked to educate people about the associated risk factors such as unhealthy diet, tobacco use and physical inactivity, which are likely to increase the risk of CVD.
