The World Bank will support Ukraine by rapidly assessing damages and needs following the destruction of a huge hydroelectric dam on the front lines between Russian and Ukrainian forces, a top bank official said on Wednesday.
Anna Bjerde, the World Bank’s managing director for operations, said in a tweet that the destruction of the Novo Kakhovka Dam “had very serious consequences for essential service delivery and the wider environment.”
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal also wrote on Twitter, saying that he spoke with Bjarde about the impact of the dam collapse, and that he assured him that the World Bank would rapidly assess damages and needs.
