World Anesthesia Day 2021: History, Significance and Types of Anesthesia

World Anesthesia Day is celebrated in the year 1846 to remember “the first successful use of diethyl ether anesthesia”. While every human civilization has attempted to condition general anesthesia for surgical procedures, it was not until the year 1846 that a successful demonstration was made in this regard. Anesthesia refers to a state of temporary loss of awareness or sensation that helps in painless surgical procedures. During surgery, anesthesia puts a patient into brief sedation.

It is also important to mention that the period between the 14th century and the 17th century saw great advances in surgical procedures and anatomy, they chose only as the last option of treatment. Modern anesthetic procedures are the result of significant scientific achievements in the 19th century.

October 16, 1846 is considered one of the most historic events in the history of medicine. The first dose of anesthesia was given at the General Hospital in Massachusetts. This breakthrough achievement helped patients perform painless surgical procedures and is still used for various surgeries.

Since then various programs have been organized to celebrate this day. It is celebrated every year by the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists, with more than 134 societies of anesthesiologists from all over the world registering their presence in the event.

Anesthesia, similar to its progress in the past, is evolving in the present era with more advanced techniques like state-of-the-art monitoring, tracheal intubation and modern anesthetic drugs, which have helped in ensuring a healthy and long life of human beings.

There are mainly three types of anesthesia used in the medical industry-

local anesthesia: It is used for minor surgery on a specific part of the body. The duration of this anesthesia is also relatively short.

General Anesthesia: This anesthesia makes the patient unconscious with the muscles relaxed. It is provided either by inhalation or by injection.

Regional anesthesia: It is used to numb large areas of the body such as the abdomen.
