Women’s ODI World Cup: Jhulan Goswami achieves another milestone, becomes first bowler to take 250 wickets in Women’s ODI

Veteran India pacer Jhulan Goswami achieved a major milestone during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup match against England on Wednesday. Goswami got the valuable wicket on Tammy Beaumont to get his 250th scalp in ODIs. The 39-year-old became the first woman bowler to cross the 250-wicket mark in women’s ODIs. Goswami is one of the most decorated players in women’s cricket and is working hard to achieve her ultimate dream of lifting the World Cup trophy.

Most wickets in women’s ODIs

  • Jhulan Goswami – 250* wickets in 199 matches
  • Katherine Fitzpatrick – 180 wickets in 109 matches
  • Anisa Mohammed – 180 wickets in 139 matches
  • Shabneem Ismail – 168 wickets in 117 matches
  • Katherine Brunt – 164 wickets in 135 matches

Earlier, in the third match of India’s ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup against West Indies, Jhulan became the leading wicket-taker in Women’s Cricket World Cup history by dismissing West Indies spinner Anissa Mohammed. Almost 17 years ago, Goswami took his maiden World Cup wicket on March 22, 2005, dismissing Inoka Gallagedara of Sri Lanka.

In the group stage clash, England bundled out India for just 134 runs as Charlotte Dean claimed four wickets. Chasing a target of 135, England lost their openers early as Meghna Singh removed Danielle Wyatt for just 1. While Goswami achieved a massive milestone from Beaumont.

Inconsistency returned to haunt the Indian batsmen after defending champions England made a less-than-par attempt to bundle out 134 runs in an ICC Women’s World Cup league stage match here on Wednesday. Last game’s centurion Smriti Mandhana (35) was the top scorer while wicket-keeper batsman Richa Ghosh scored 33 before England opted to field first and bowl India out in 36.2 overs.

This was in stark contrast to India’s performance in their previous match against West Indies, when they scored 317 for 8 with hundreds from Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur, their highest score in the history of the showpiece event. Charlie Dean (4/23) was the bowlers’ choice for England, while Anya Shrubsole also picked up two wickets as the Indians failed to build a decent partnership.

With three defeats in all the matches so far, this is an essential match for the title holders and four-time champions England.
