The BCCI on Wednesday confirmed that the league will be called the Women’s Premier League – WPL and also released the list of successful bidders.

A new chapter in the history of Indian women’s cricket was added on Wednesday after five franchises successfully bid to feature in the inaugural edition of the Women’s IPL. Days after the BCCI sold the media rights of the tournament for Rs 951 crore, the Indian cricket board confirmed that the league will be called the Women’s Premier League – WPL.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed the development through a tweet on Wednesday, stating that the bidding for teams for the inaugural edition of the WPL broke the records set by the inaugural men’s IPL in 2008.

“Today is a historic day in cricket as the bid for the teams of the inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we have secured Rs 4669.99 crore in total bid. This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sporting fraternity,” Shah tweeted.

“#WPL will bring much-needed reforms in women’s cricket and ensure a comprehensive ecosystem that benefits every stakeholder,” she added.

The BCCI retweeted Shah’s post and wrote, “Let’s hear it for the Women’s Premier League!”

The five successful bidders for the inaugural season of WPL include Adani Sportsline Private Limited (Ahmedabad), IndiaWin. Play Pvt. Ltd. (Mumbai), Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd. (Bangalore), JSW GMR Cricket Private Limited (Delhi) and Capri Global Holdings Private Limited (Lucknow).

BCCI shared a picture, confirming the exact amount made by all the successful bidders. Adani spent the biggest amount – Rs 1289 crore to buy the Ahmedabad based franchise. Capri Global bought the Lucknow-based franchise for Rs 757 crore, which was the lowest amount spent in the auction.

The official names of all the five franchises are yet to be announced.

Earlier on January 16, the BCCI had confirmed that Viacom18 has won the media rights of the upcoming women’s IPL after paying a whopping amount of Rs 951 crore for five seasons starting 2023, which means for the next five years. 7.09 crores per game.
