Police said in their suicide note that Kushum Dahiya alleged that the family of former sarpanch Rajabal had asked him to invest in a ‘kitty’ a few years back. Kushum started digging into his savings and over time, invested around Rs 5 lakh. In her note, she claimed that for the past few months she was struggling to get her money back. She alleged that whenever she asked for her return, Rajabal and her family members including her husband Naresh Sehrawat and her brother Satish would refuse and ‘harass’ her, prompting her to end her life, she alleged. Police said the note contained details about the alleged harassment and mentioned the names of the accused.
Kushum’s husband Sawan Dahiya, who works as a security guard at a city hospital, said they married in 2002 and had two children. “Kusum used to take care of all the household expenses.” Through Sukhrali’s former sarpanch Rajabal, she had invested a huge amount in the kitty committee. But her money could not be returned. Rajabal was threatening and harassing her,” Sawan blamed.
Sawan told TOI that he had left home around 8.30 pm on Monday for night duty at the hospital. When he returned the next morning, he found his wife’s body lying on the bed. Police said he had used a dupatta to hang it from the fan.
Police spokesperson Subhash Boken said that on the basis of Kusum’s note, sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC were booked against Rajabal, Naresh, Satish and another family member at Sector 17/18 police station. Case has been registered. , adding that an investigation is underway.
According to Sawan, Rajabal’s family contacted him after the FIR was registered. “They had come home with the money Kusum had invested over the years,” he claimed.
Rajabal denied all allegations of harassment and denied that he or his family members had made any threats to Kushum. “It is unfortunate that he took such a big step. Our intention was always to support the people,” she said, adding that there was no controversy.
