A 24-year-old woman, who allegedly attempted suicide with a man outside the Supreme Court here, died on Tuesday.

On August 16, in an attempt to self-immolation, the woman had suffered 85 per cent burns. The 27-year-old man suffered 65 per cent burns and died on Saturday. Both were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Deepak Yadav said, “The woman died during treatment on Tuesday.” After the woman and the man attempted self-immolation, the police had registered a case under section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.

They suspected that the man had convinced the woman to take this extreme step.

She said that she hails from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh and was allegedly raped by Bahujan Samaj Party MP Atul Rai in 2019.

The MPs are in judicial custody for the last two years in this case.

Before attempting suicide, the woman had recorded a Facebook Live video with her colleague in which she revealed her identity and claimed that she had filed a rape case against Rai in 2019.

He alleged that some senior police officers were supporting the accused.

Earlier, a senior police officer had said that the man and the woman took the step after a court issued non-bailable warrants against them in a forgery case for allegedly submitting false proof of age in a rape case. Was. did.

The woman had mentioned the warrant in her Facebook video and was summoned by the judge.

In March, the woman filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking transfer of her rape case from Allahabad to Delhi for a fair trial, claiming that she faced threat to her life.

Later in August, a local court in Varanasi issued a non-bailable warrant against him in a forgery case based on a complaint filed by Rai’s brother. – PTI
