Forum for Good Governance, a not-for-profit organisation based in Hyderabad, has written to Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy to withdraw trivial cases registered against prominent political leaders, including him.
In the letter, the organisation argued that voting percentage is low in urban areas and service-oriented citizens are shying away from joining politics after taking a look at these criminal cases. Most of the cases filed against former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Reddy and Revanth Reddy are related to Telangana agitation and election code violations, the letter said.
The letter cites examples of trivial cases registered against MoS (Home Affairs) Bandi Sanjay Kumar and Congress MLA Vedma Bhojju too.
KCR has nine cases related to Telangana agitation filed against him. During the Million March in 2011, three cases were filed against him after a few people snatched cameras of media persons. It has been lying in cold storage since then. Another case was filed against him after followers gave a ‘rasta roko’ call to protest his arrest. No progress has been made in this case either. The forum collected this information from the affidavits filed by these leaders before elections.
BJP leader Bandi Sanjay Kumar has 42 cases registered against him, most of which are trivial. For example, complaints were raised against him for entering Yadagirigutta temple without permission, for making a false statement against BRS leader K Kavitha and for flouting Covid-19 protocol.
CM Revanth Reddy has 89 cases against him. Most of them are trivial, the organisation argued. For example, 35 cases were filed for “alleged speech against police for supporting ruling party”. Other complaints include conducting meeting with more people than the permitted numbers, and participation in meetings without wearing mask.
“So far, there has been no inquiry in these cases and no charge sheet was filed. The very look of the description of cases looks absurd, and police registered cases at the behest of politicians,” says the letter.
Vedma Bhojju has 52 cases registered against him, mostly for fighting for the rights of Gond tribe.
“The overaction of police to please political bosses needs to be examined and the cases withdrawn. Forum for Good Governance is not generalising and recommending that all cases against all politicians should be withdrawn. Our contention is that a majority of cases booked against politicians were done under pressure from ruling party at that time,” wrote M Padmanabha Reddy, president of Forum for Good Governance.
