With Fighter, Citadel and Mythoverse, Bollywood filmmakers experiment with new storytelling formats

Bollywood With the passage of time, filmmakers are reinventing themselves. So is the audience, who are getting used to the different stories and formats through western performances. Not long ago, Netflix and Charlie Brooker brought Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, a one-of-a-kind, immersive and choice-your-own-adventure format. It managed to grab attention for its newness. Similarly, the success of anthology movies on the Indian OTT platform is also proof that there is a hot demand for freshness.

Now, Viacom18 Studios in association with Siddharth Anand has announced India’s first aerial action adventure franchise, the first of which will be Deepika Padukone and Hrithik Roshan starrer Fighter. Siddharth said, “With this film we aim to put Indian films on the map for action-loving global theatrical audiences, who crave the spectacle and the big screen experience.” The film will be of a big budget and will involve new filmmaking techniques.

Elsewhere, Raj and DK will lead the Indian version of the Citadel, a one-of-a-kind project emerging in the West. With the Mothership series starting in Hollywood, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden (already filming), the Citadel will also have local production in Italy, Mexico, India and other countries. Each series will have references to each other thus making it a truly global franchise. It is a high budget espionage franchise concept developed for Amazon by the Russo Brothers.

Ram Madhvani has also announced India’s first action-adventure thriller based Underwater. Its name is Dive.

Madhu Mantena is backing a mega-budget ‘Mythoverse’, which will harness India’s rich history to bring to the world the world’s first mythology-based cinematic universe. Madhu recently said that the 3 part live action Ramayan will be the first project of this new universe of films. The budget is being told beyond Rs 600 crore.

Producer Aditya Chopra is also planning to create a universe from his spy films War and Ek Tha Tiger series. Pathan is said to be referring to Salman Khan’s Tiger franchise along with Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham.

Uri: The Surgical Strike director Aditya Dhar is also gearing up for his ambitious project The Immortal Ashwatthama, which blends mythology and modern filmmaking techniques, thus promising a new experience for the audience.

With big budgets and cutting edge technology coming at a fast pace, Indian audiences are ready for film spectacles like James Cameron did with Avatar in 2009. Meanwhile, the filmmakers are eyeing to create hesitation in the film business.
