Indian cricket fans are often deprived of basic amenities at most places across the country

The BCCI is planning a massive renovation of at least five major stadiums in India with an estimated cost of over Rs 500 crore ahead of the ODI World Cup in October-November.

The game has attracted huge money in the last 10 years, making the BCCI, the richest board in the world, richer. However, the fanatical fan following that has made the sport what it is, is often left out of basic amenities in most places across the country.

During the India-Australia Test series in February-March, fans vented their anger at the lack of clean toilets at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.

It is not surprising that Delhi is among the five venues which were assessed by the BCCI for their gap.

A gap assessment outlines the existing gaps between an organization’s current and ideal future state.

The other sites are Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mohali and Mumbai, according to the list accessed by PTI.

The Wankhede in Mumbai was renovated ahead of the India-Australia ODI last month after a fan complained about the poor sanitary conditions at the famous stadium.

The estimated cost of renovation of five sites is in crores.

Even if one does not take into account the cost of renovating the roof, which is not possible at least in Delhi due to structural flaws at the venue, the cost is huge.

The revamp of Delhi Stadium will cost Rs 100 crore, Hyderabad Rs 117.17 crore, Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens Rs 127.47 crore, the old PCA Stadium in Mohali Rs 79.46 crore and Wankhede Rs 78.82 crore. If roofing work is involved then there is a huge increase in the cost.

Twelve venues have been selected to host the World Cup games and these include Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Rajkot, Mumbai and Ahmedabad as the possible venues for the finals.

A total of 48 matches will be played in the 46-day ICC event. India last hosted the ODI World Cup in 2011 when the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side lifted the trophy.
