With 16,420 fresh cases, Mumbai saw a nearly 41 per cent increase in the number of Covid infections on Wednesday, leaving officials worried. On Tuesday, 11,647 cases were reported in the city.

Compared to Tuesday, the city saw a one-day increase of 4,773 cases. With this, the city’s total infections rose to 956,287 and the death toll rose to 16,420.

The BMC in its bulletin said that after witnessing a decline in daily COVID-19 cases for the past four days, the financial capital of the country has witnessed a rise of 40.98 per cent in cases.

With the rise in daily cases, the COVID-19 positivity rate also increased to 24.38 per cent from 18.75 per cent on Tuesday.

Municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said the increase in daily positive cases was due to the revised national testing guidelines. “Due to the recent change in the national COVID testing guidelines two days back, where it has been directed that only symptomatic cases will be tested, it is likely to cause a spike in positivity as most of the symptomatic cases will be almost confirmed positive cases. ,” They said.
