Wins US appeal to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from UK

London: The United States has won an appeal in the London High Court regarding the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from Britain to face criminal charges.

This came after the London High Court was satisfied with assurances given by the United States about the terms of Assange’s detention.

The terms of the detention include a resolution not to keep Assange in the so-called “ADX” maximum security prison in Colorado and to be transferred to Australia if convicted of serving a sentence.

“The court allows the appeal,” said Judge Timothy Holroyde.

Judge Holroyde said the case should now be referred to Westminster Magistrates’ Court, with the judges sending it to the British government to decide whether Assange should be extradited to the US, Reuters reported.

The charges against 50-year-old Australian-born Assange by United States officials include breaching espionage laws and conspiring to hack government computers.

He has been charged with 18 counts related to WikiLeaks’ release of huge troves of confidential US military records and diplomatic cables that officials said threatened lives.

Authorities appealed against a London district judge’s January 4 decision that Assange should not be extradited because he could commit suicide in a US prison.

WikiLeaks came to light when it published a US military video in 2010 showing an attack by Apache helicopters in Baghdad in 2007.

After this WikiLeaks released thousands of confidential confidential files and diplomatic cables.
