Defending champion Novak Djokovic admitted on Monday that his first-round match against South Korean Kwon Soon-woo at Wimbledon was not an easy one for him.

Djokovic defeated Soon-woo 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to enter the second round. With the win, the 35-year-old became the first player, male or female, to record 80 singles victories in all four Grand Slams.

Djokovic, bidding for a fourth consecutive title at Wimbledon, did not play any grasscourt warm-up before the championship.

“I didn’t have a lead-up or preparatory tournament before, so you’re always going to feel less comfortable than you would like, especially if you’re playing against someone talented who lives close to Kwon. Line and The hit was really neat,” Djokovic was quoted as saying.

“It wasn’t easy. I had to add some variety to the game. Serves helped but at this stage a shot or two decides the winner.”

The Serb is bidding for a fourth consecutive title at Wimbledon. He looked rusty on the surface of the grasscourt on the first day of the tournament, with rain interrupted after 30 minutes. However, the match between Djokovic and Soon-woo was rain-free as the roof of the center court was closed.

Djokovic will take on Thanasi Kokinakis or Kamil Mazchrazak in the second round.
