Last time

Djokovic became the first man in 71 years to win Wimbledon after missing a championship point, defeating Roger Federer 7-6(5), 1-6, 7-6(4), 4-6, 13-12(3) . It was the first fifth set tiebreaker in the final at the All England Club. Federer was one point from the win twice while leading 8-7 in that set. Djokovic won his fifth Wimbledon title and second in a row, taking his Grand Slam to 16 trophies. He is currently ranked 19th, just one way away from breaking the men’s record shared by Federer and Rafael Nadal. Halep described it as a perfect match to beat Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2 in less than an hour in the women’s final. Halep made only three unforced errors, 23 less than Williams. That win gave Halep his second Grand Slam title. She would not return to defend that championship, however, as a torn calf muscle forced her to withdraw from this year’s tournament.

key figures

Serena Williams won 7 Wimbledon singles championships, part of her Grand Slam total of 23, the most in the Open era that began in 1968. The only player with more is Margaret Court, who won 24 games in the amateur and professional eras.

Roger Federer (8), Novak Djokovic (5), Rafael Nadal (2) and Andy Murray (2) won 17 consecutive Wimbledon titles, a series that began in 2003.

There were 34 Americans (21 women, 13 men) in the singles bracket, the most at Wimbledon since 35 in 1998.

first day look-ahead

Djokovic will begin his bid for a third major 2021 title on Monday at Center Court, facing wild-card entrant Jack Draper, 19-year-old left-hander from England, who is making his Grand Slam debut. This will be followed by a performance in the main stadium between the pair of two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova versus 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens. When she heard who she would play with, Kvitova said, I was like, Well, it ain’t easy, but that’s how it is. The third center court match on the first day saw the return of Andy Murray, whose 2013 All England Club title was the first for a British man in singles in 77 years. Murray has not participated in singles at Wimbledon since 2017 due to two hip operations. Other Grand Slam trophy owners in Monday’s event include: Venus Williams, Garby Muguruza, Inga Swietake, Sofia Kenin and leading runners-up Stefanos Tsitsipas and Kevin Anderson.
