New Delhi:

BJP MP Varun Gandhi tweeted a viral video this morning, which shows farmers crushing farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur district – an incident that killed eight people, and was condemned across the country. “This video will shake anyone’s soul,” the BJP leader wrote and appealed for “immediate arrest”.

The BJP MP from Lakhimpur said, “In Lakhimpur, a video showing cars running over farmers will shake anyone’s soul. Police should take note of this video and seek immediate action against the car owners, the people in the car and others.” The arrest should be made.” UP’s Pilibhit said in a tweet in Hindi.

There have been no arrests in the Lakhimpur violence, which has now become a national issue and all opposition parties are criticizing the ruling BJP for its handling of the matter.

Union Minister of State for Home Ajai Kumar Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra is the only person named in the murder case; He has denied that he was on the spot.

Varun Gandhi may have been the only BJP leader who expressed serious concern over the turn of events, demanding a Supreme Court-monitored probe.

On Sunday, farmers who gathered to block the visit of Union Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Maurya said that the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri district started after his car crushed the protesters.

The viral video – which has been shared by many in the opposition – has yet to be verified by the police. NDTV cannot independently verify its authenticity.

Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who has been in police custody for over 30 hours, also tweeted the clip and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi if he had seen the video before his Lucknow visit. The Congress leader was arrested on his way to Lakhimpur.

Several opposition leaders were barred from visiting the district after Sunday’s violence. Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav was detained when he was protesting outside his house in Lucknow. Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Channi was also denied permission to visit the state.

The issue gained national attention a few months before the state elections and amid protests by farmers against three controversial laws.
