Sarma said, “I will reach out to the community for their empowerment, while I still stand by my ideology.”

While the Assam government is facing opposition from political parties like the Congress over the issue, the Muslim-majority AIUDF has agreed to look into the matter.

Sarma said, “They can all call me by name and accuse me of targeting a particular community. I don’t believe my words wrong, yes my government has done what is logical. Empowering Muslim women.” Creating is the topmost priority of my government.

A fortnight ago, the Assam government announced that it would gradually implement the two-child policy, and violators would not be able to contest any local or panchayat elections and would be eligible for government jobs. If they are already employed in a government job, they will be dismissed.

In addition, they will also be deprived of state government schemes like Arunodaya and Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana to name a few. The state assembly had passed the ‘Population and Women’s Empowerment Policy of Assam’ in September 2017.
