He said: “If my party fielded me from Bhabnipur against Mamata Banerjee, I will give my best and I hope people will support me in this fight of justice versus injustice. I am sure that people are ruling TMC’s misrule. Will vote against. This is our fight against the post-poll violence and the suffering of the people in Bengal.

I want to request the residents of Bhawanipur who they want to support… BJP or Mamata Banerjee who is only the chief minister’s chair We are fighting elections to retain. They are only interested in retaining power but our fight is against the undemocratic functioning of the state government.

Reacting to the development, TMC’s deputy chief whip in the state assembly Tapas Roy said: “It is not a matter of concern for the TMC. All I can say is that the BJP candidate’s deposit will be forfeited as our leader Mamata Banerjee will emerge as the winner with a record margin. BJP MP Arjun Singh has been appointed as observer of Bhabnipur assembly seat.

The Congress has decided not to field any candidate against Banerjee, while its ally CPI(M) has decided to field advocate Shreejib Biswas from Bhabnipur.

The by-polls will be held on 30 September and the counting of votes will take place on 3 October. The election is crucial for Banerjee to continue as the CM of the state.

As per Article 164 of the Constitution, a minister who is not an MLA within six months has to resign and hence it is important for Banerjee to win the by-election.
