Sources told News18 that the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government has introduced a Program Monitoring Unit that will monitor the implementation and operation of state schemes and projects. Sources added that the goal here is to ensure good governance that will translate into votes in 2026 Assembly elections
With two years to go for the 2026 Assembly elections, the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal has launched an initiative to combat potential anti-incumbency as it chalks up plans to seek a fourth straight term in power.
Sources told News18 that the state government has introduced a Program Monitoring Unit that will monitor the implementation and operation of schemes and projects of the government in coordination with different departments, implementing agencies and district administrations. Sources added that the goal here is to ensure good governance that will translate into votes in 2026.
The orders to constitute the unit have been issued by the government and the responsibility to lead the initiative has been entrusted with Panchayat Secretary P Ulganathan.
Insiders told News18 that the TMC government’s welfare schemes have received positive response in rural areas. Schemes like Lakshmir Bhandar, Kanyashree, Rupashree and Krishak Bondhu are also popular. Since the Panchayat Department works well in rural areas, the Program Monitoring Unit has also been entrusted with the department.
Sources said the unit will coordinate with different departments, district administration and implementing agencies to monitor priority schemes and projects, and track projects as per set timelines. The unit will reportedly assess public grievances and will come up with time-bound solutions.
The unit will collect data from various departments and agencies for analysis, reviews and speedy implementation. Regular reports and feedback on the performance of various schemes being implement by different departments will be sent to the government.
The unit, sources said, will help the government bring in much-needed transparency at a time when it is facing corruption accusations from opposition BJP.
