Goa and Karnataka are loggers at the diversion of Mahadayi waters through the construction of dams by Karnataka on the river’s tributaries Kalasa and Banduri.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said the coastal state will win the battle for Mahadayi river water as his government is making efforts on the legal, technical and political fronts and is leaving no stone unturned.

Goa and Karnataka are entangled at the juncture of the Mahadayi waters through the construction of dams by Karnataka on the river’s tributaries Kalasa and Banduri.

The Central Water Commission has recently approved a Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by Karnataka for the construction of two dams, which has been objected to by the Goa government.

The Goa government has argued that Karnataka cannot divert the waters of the Mahadayi River, as it passes through the Mahadayi Wildlife Sanctuary, which is located downstream in North Goa.

No matter what anyone says, we are firm on our decision. Whatever we have to do for Mahadayi, we are doing legally, technically and politically. We will do whatever is necessary and we are confident that we will win the battle, Sawant said on Tuesday.

He was reacting to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s reported statement on a resolution being moved by the Goa Assembly against diversion of Mahadayi river water.
