‘Will fight for truth till my last breath’: Sidhu takes moral heights on camera, sends message to top brass

Amid speculation that the Congress high command was looking for his replacement, the former Punjab Unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu tweeted a video message in Punjabi on Wednesday morning, saying he would fight for the truth “till his last breath”.

Sidhu, whose shock exit left the Congress, which is preparing for assembly elections just four months away, said: “This is not a personal fight, but a fight of principles. I will not compromise on principles.” He said he would not accept bringing back the tainted ministers.

The cricketer-turned-politician was reportedly upset with Rana Gurjit Singh being re-inducted into the cabinet. Singh has been accused of a role in the sand mining scam and left the Amarinder Singh cabinet in 2018. He was later cleared by an inquiry panel.

Sidhu was also reportedly against the key home ministry being handed over to Deputy Chief Minister SS Randhawa, his rival. He had earlier strongly opposed any talk of making Randhawa the chief minister after the resignation of Amarinder Singh.

In his message, Sidhu said that he fought for justice and the agenda of Punjab for 17 years. “Today, there is agreement with the issues. The tainted officers and ministers who were removed have been brought back. Those who gave clean chit to Badal have now been entrusted with the task of getting justice.

As Sidhu seemed reluctant to take back his resignation, an angry Gandhi has begun discussions on new names for the Punjab unit chief. Giving shape to Sidhu, it has been decided that the state leadership under Channi’s guidance will resolve the crisis and there will be no central intervention.

Sidhu’s resignation has now fueled speculation about his next course of action. There are many questions unanswered: Will he join you? Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, who will be on a 2-day tour of Punjab from Wednesday, is yet to announce the CM face in the state, which is due for elections in 2022. Is Congress the final loser in these internal party fights? Most importantly, Sidhu’s resignation has now put a big question mark on the continuance of the new Punjab cabinet. Will there be another expansion in the state?
