Over 200 students from Tripura, who are studying at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and the Central Agricultural University in Manipur, have been stranded there since Wednesday due to caste violence.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday announced that all the students of the state stranded in violence-hit Manipur would be brought back by a special flight at the earliest.

The announcement came hours after the chief minister’s meeting with the parents of students stranded in the crisis-hit state.

The meeting was held at the Chief Minister’s official residence in the presence of Chief Secretary JK Sinha and Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan.

“To help Tripura students studying in Manipur, a special team has been sent by the government to the trouble-torn state to bring back the students,” Saha said in a Facebook post.

“Besides, necessary arrangements have been made to bring them back in an aircraft at the earliest,” he added.

Saha also spoke to his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh during the day to know the latest situation there.

Earlier in the day, Leader of the Opposition Animesh Debbarma sought the Chief Minister’s intervention to bring back all students stranded in Tripura from violence-hit Manipur.

“Students from Tripura are facing safety and security threats in Manipur, and some hostels are also reporting food shortages due to supply chain disruption. I have heard that there is no air ticket available till 10th May on Agartala-Imphal route. This is a serious problem.

Debbarma also said, “If air tickets are not available, the state government should talk to the airlines to make necessary arrangements to bring back all the students. I hope the Chief Minister will take appropriate steps. Violent clashes broke out between tribals and people of the majority Meitei community in Manipur on Wednesday, displacing thousands.

The clashes broke out after a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was organized in ten hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meites constitute about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and mostly live in the Imphal Valley.

The tribals – the Nagas and the Kukis – form 40 per cent of the population and live mostly in the hill districts.
